Aberdeen’s Avery Dean scored a game-tying goal midway through the second period, and the Aberdeen Cougars went into the locker room holding the momentum card.
Sioux Falls stole that card back, however, dominating the third period en route to a 6-1 boys hockey win over the Cougars Sunday evening at the Odde Ice Center.
The Flyers had taken a 1-0 lead with a goal in the first period, but the Cougars limited the damage to just that one goal, then put together several chances in the second period.
Dean finally took advantage of one of those opportunities, scoring on a power play off a centering pass from Braydon Jones.
After a scurry of activity late in the period, the two teams left the ice knotted at a goal apiece.
But the third period belonged almost entirely to the Flyers, who scored two goals in a 30-second span with just over seven minutes gone by in the period
The Flyers tacked on three more in relatively quick succession, all three coming in a four and a half minute span.
Sioux Falls’ Matthew Haar had two goals, as did Braden Malwitz. Alex Schaar and Kevin Zhou tacked on insurance goals late.
It was a bitter ending to senior day for the Cougars, who honored seniors Hunter Wilkie, Trey Wagemann, Dean, Elias Altman and Matthew Feiock.
The Cougars have four games remaining on their schedule, all on the road. That stretch begins with three games in three days next weekend, as Aberdeen faces Huron Friday, followed by the two Sioux Falls programs Saturday and Sunday.

The Aberdeen Cougars outscored the visiting Mitchell Marlins 2-1 over the course of the final two periods, but it was a 3-goal first period that sealed the deal for the Marlins, who claimed a 4-3 victory Saturday afternoon at the Odde Ice Center.
The Marlins got two goals late in the period from Austin Kerr to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission. Trey Wagemann had Aberdeen's lone tally in that first period.

Elias Altman made it a 1-goal game less than 4 minutes into the third, but the Cougars could not find the equalizer.
