Boys High School Hockey: Cougars skate to first win, 7-4 over Yankton

Powered by a three-goal second period, the Aberdeen Cougars boys hockey squad picked up its first varsity win of the season, winning 7-4 over the Yankton Bucks at the Odde Ice Center.

It didn't take long for the home team to get on the board. Braydon Jones scored with 22 seconds gone by in the first period to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Carson Cleberg had the assist. Yankton tied the game at one, but with 1:42 on the clock, Jones netted his second of the game to give Aberdeen a 2-1 lead heading to the first intermission.

Yankton scored right out the break to tie the game at two, the home team responded again, this time with three unanswered goals to regain control. Avery Dean gave the Cougars a 3-2 lead at the 12:23 mark, scoring his third goal of the season. Trey Wageman handled the final two goals of the period, scoring what would prove to be the game-winner with three minutes to go before intermission to make it it a 5-2 Cougars lead. Charles Olson and Elias Altman had the assist.

Jones scored the final goal of the game with 25 second left, getting the hat trick and team-leading sixth of the year. Matthew Feiock made 23 saves in the win.

Cougar boys complete weekend sweep

Braydon Jones followed up a hat trick Saturday with a game-winner Sunday, and the Aberdeen Cougar boys hockey program completed a weekend sweep, taking a 3-2 victory over the Sioux Falls Flyers 2 Sunday afternoon at the Odde Ice Center.

Jones finished with two assists plus the game winner with less than a minute remaining in the game, lifting the Cougars to just their second win of the season.

"Huge weekend for us," said Cougars coach Jon Aldinger. "We played solid hockey (Sunday). Got some good scoring yesterday, and good goal tending both days."

Aldinger paused.

"We needed it," he added.

It was a big payoff after weeks of being on the cusp, but never quite able to get over that final edge for the Cougars.

"You put all this work in all year long," Aldinger said. "We've been on the ice since September. To finally get some confidence is huge. We've got three good games coming up next weekend that we're ready for."

Sioux Falls got on the board first, scoring a power play goal just two minutes into the second period. It could have signaled a downward spiral for the Cougars.

But it didn't.

"The guys are getting along so well," Aldinger said. "We've got good chemistry going. One guy came off the ice and made himself accountable right away. He said, 'I'm sorry, guys.' And there was no bickering, no nothing."

Avery Dean scored later in the period to even the tide, then Elias Altman took advantage of a power play situation to start the third period with a go-ahead goal.

But Sioux Falls had an answering goal with just over four minutes to play.

As time dwindled, the two teams appeared destined to hit zeros on the clock still knotted at two goals apiece, until Jones drove home the game winner with 15 seconds remaining in the game, taking the assist from Dean and Altman.

"Avery Dean played one of the most outstanding games I've ever seen him play," Aldinger said. "I've coached him for a while. And you expect Braydon to do what he does. It's a game we've needed for a long time."

Aberdeen will host Huron Friday, then head to Brookings Saturday and Mitchell Sunday.

Boys High School Hockey: Cougars lose early lead, fall at home to Oahe

The Aberdeen Cougars boys hockey team led the Oahe Capitals 2-1 after the first period, but did not tally another goal over the final two periods and fell 5-2 at the Odde Ice Center. Aberdeen drops to 0-5 on the year.

The Cougars jumped on the visitors early grabbing a 2-0 lead within the games first six minutes. Logan Scheel opened the scoring with an unassisted goal coming at the 5:06 mark of the first. Mason Carrels would double the lead at the 6:43 mark when he scored off the assist by Braydon Jones and Avery Dean. However, Oahe would cut the lead to one on a goal with 16 second left in the first period.

The second period began much the same way as the first ended. Oahe tied the game at two with just 1:34 gone off the clock, then would get what would prove to be the game winner at the 12:31 mark on a Ryan Wedin goal. Capitals goaltender Riley Briggs would turn back 23 of the 25 shots he faced while Cougars goalie Hunter Wilkie stopped 30 of 35 shots.

The Cougars will host Brookings Sunday at the Odde Ice Center for a 5 p.m. start.
