The Aberdeen Cougars boys hockey team fell 5-2 to Huron, the host team of the Rooster Classic, in Huron Sunday.

The first and third periods were stalemate zeroes, but they bookended a wild second, when all seven total goals were scored.

“Second period, which we’ve been playing pretty good the last two games, it jumped out and got us (Sunday),” Cougars head coach Jon Aldinger said. “Pitching shutouts in the first and third periods was pretty good. We had some scoring chances, but couldn’t get the puck in. The two goals, one came from the first line, one from the third line, which we needed, because our second line did all the scoring the first two days.”

The two Cougars goals came from Kael Campbell and Tommy Chandler.

Aldinger’s squad came away from its opening weekend winless, but that doesn’t dampen the coach’s hopes for his oft-embattled team.

“Getting our first couple games that aren’t state league under our belt, playing with lines a bit, seeing who actually — you see one thing at practice and it might look good, but you see something in a game — moving a guy from one line to a different line, stuff like that. Testing out defensive pairings over the weekend, all sorts of stuff, and then getting everybody to buy in to what we’re trying to do is a big deal. The camaraderie in the locker room and on the bench. We didn’t have that last year. I think the boys are willing to put in a little work now to know they have a legitimate chance to play with some of these teams that have given them fits over the years.”

Aldinger credited his eight seniors with changing the culture on the team this season.

“We’re hoping to get some balanced scoring, and we know we can get goals from all three lines, which proved to be the case (Sunday),” he said. “We’ll go forward and play tough Sioux Falls team next Saturday, but I think these guys, being older and more mature, are ready for the battle.”
